INERELA+ Zimbabwe: Empowering Youths Through Climate Change Mitigation and Smart Agriculture August 2025

Steven Chiswa (Zimbabwe Junior Parliamentarian) had the privilege of participating in INERELA+ Zimbabwe workshops focused on climate change mitigation and smart agriculture. This knowledge has not only transformed his understanding of environmental issues but also inspired him to take action within his school, TC Hardy, and the community where he lives, called Timire Park. The workshops presented him with invaluable insights into sustainable practices that can combat climate change. He learnt innovative agricultural techniques, such as crop rotation, permaculture, and efficient water management. Armed with this knowledge, Steven Chiswa felt compelled to share what he had learnt with his peers and community members. At his school, Steven Chiswa initiated a club called the TC Hardy Environmental Club, which focuses mainly on initiatives around climate conservation, awareness raising, and youth empowerment. The club engages students in sessions centered around climate education and sustainable practices. It also organises seminars, inviting local experts to speak on the importance of climate change mitigation. In practice, the club established a school garden that employs smart agriculture techniques, allowing students to apply what they’ve learned in a practical setting. This initiative has not only enhanced our knowledge but also fostered a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Realizing the need for broader community engagement, Steven Chiswa organized workshops in Timire Park, where he invited community members to learn about sustainable farming practices. In the workshop, the dialogue was on the impact of climate change on the local environment and how adopting smart agriculture can enhance food security. By sharing success stories and practical demonstrations, many families were motivated to adopt these practices, leading to improved crop yields and better resource management. During the workshop, the youth from the school club and the community also launched a project to plant new trees, targeting to plant at least 1000 new trees in the community, and by now, the project has already achieved to plant 621 trees around the community and expects to achieve the target before end of year 2025.

Steven Chiswa leverages on his position as a junior parliamentarian to advocate for youth involvement in climate action. He organized campaigns to highlight the importance of climate education in schools across Zimbabwe, emphasizing that empowering youths is crucial for the nation’s sustainable future. During campaigns, he collaborated with local NGOs and government bodies to create platforms for youth to voice their concerns and suggestions regarding climate policy. Through his work with INERELA + Zimbabwe, he can now testify firsthand the power of knowledge and community engagement. The initiatives at TC Hardy and in Timire Park have not only inspired my peers but have also contributed to a growing movement towards sustainable practices among youths in Zimbabwe. He is committed to continuing the journey, believing that together as youth and communities, they can achieve a more sustainable future for all.
