INERELA+ Zimbabwe in partnership with the Gays and Lesbians Association of Zimbabwe (GALZ) and Development Agenda for Girls and Young Women in Africa Network (DAWA) conducted a series of dialogues between religious leaders, sex workers, gays and lesbians to change their attitude and behaviours towards sex workers. The dialogue was conducted at the Great Zimbabwe Hotel with 40 participants in attendance mainly religious leaders from different churches and key populations representatives. The topics discussed were effective advocacy towards decriminalization of sex work, fight against stigma and discrimination of sex workers in churches and communities among other pertinent issues that sex workers face in their trade. Participants especially religious leaders in attendance confessed that the dialogue was indeed an eye-opener and pledged to further sensitise their congregants and constituencies on the need for positive behaviours change to accommodate sex workers as any other human beings with the appropriate rights and dignity. However, during invitations, INERELA+ Zimbabwe noted that one prominent church turned down the offer to participate in the workshop indicating that they were not prepared to associate with key populations as the group is branded sinners among their congregants. The pastor upon rejecting the invitation profusely said, “Let this cup pass”. This incident clearly showed how judgmental other stakeholders can be towards sex workers and an awakening of all civil society organizations to realize that there is still a long way to go in fighting for the rights of sex workers and liberating the minds of communities from stigmitisation and discrimination of key populations. It was a lesson learnt on the need to intensify and engage communities through dialogues, education campaigns and awareness sessions.
