ZANERELA+ youth participated in a youth conference held at Bible Gospel Church in Africa (BIGOCA), Kalingalinga, on the 28th of March 2026. The youth conference was held under the theme “Adolescence” and was led by INERELA+- trained religious leader Bishop Lazarous Shumba. The youth invited from BIGOCA congregations around Lusaka were between the ages of 10 and 19. Besides the bible teachings from different youth pastors, the conference exposed the youth to different key subjects that affect the youth, such as Mental Health, Early pregnancies, Early Child forced marriages, Sexual harassment, Drug abuse and the need to practice positive masculinity specifically for boys. For proactivity and positive participation, the facilitators delivered these lessons using bible verses, games, illustrations, dramas and focus groups. The activities created a safe space where the youth were able to raise questions, contribute, give life testimonies and experiences that they could not share elsewhere due to fear of being victimized and discriminated. Some youth champions had the chance to make presentations on the impact of their involvement and participation in ZINERELA+ Adolescence and Life Skills trainings. At least over 150 youth were impacted by impact testimonies, counselling and guidance by the youth champions, youth pastors and other religious leaders who work with adolescents in church. One of the youths confessed that, “the conference was an eye opener to what is regarded as taboo from where I come from, some of the issues that were discussed I honestly had no chance of either discussing or hearing them in my community or around my parents and friends. Thanks to the organisers and ZINERELA+ for lifelong lessons.” BIGOCA leadership announced a rather bigger conference to be held in 2027, accommodating youth not only from their congregation but also from other churches and nearby communities as a way of spreading the word, catch them young mantra and reaching out to the voiceless.
