The World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026, hosted by Aga Khan University, WHO and Africa CDC took place from April 27–29 at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Under the theme “Reimagining Africa’s Health Systems: Innovation, Integration, a Interdependence,” discussions highlighted persistent structural constraints, including under resourced primary healthcare systems, uneven access to care, workforce shortages, and fragmented financing mechanisms, while advancing practical pathways to address them at scale. The 2026 convening marked a clear pivot point in the WHS Regional Meeting agenda, with stakeholders aligning around the need to move beyond fragmented interventions toward coordinated, scalable, and accountable health systems delivery models. The meeting emphasized that future progress will depend not only on policy alignment, but on measurable execution at country level, with stronger accountability mechanisms to track implementation outcomes.
On the 27th of April 2026, HE President William Ruto the President of Kenya addressed the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026, Nairobi, that brought together 3,000 delegates ranging from leaders, researchers, innovators, Ministers of Health, global health institutions, multilateral agencies, private sector leaders, youth representatives and change makers from more than 80 countries from Africa and beyond who gathered to explore solutions that strengthen Africa’s health systems and advance global health progress. In his address during the opening session, he emphasised that Africa should no longer a passive participant in global health. Instead, it should be an active architect of its own direction, priorities, and outcomes.
Additionally, he indicated that the future of health policy, innovation, and delivery cannot be meaningfully advanced without Africa at the centre of both deliberation and implementation. In order to realise this grand plan, Ruto indicated that we need to re-imagine Africa’s health systems and place policy leadership, technology and mobilisation of domestic resources at the centre of this paradigm shift. More fundamentally, Africa’s health systems can only be sound when we are able to manufacture adequate health commodities within the continent. The World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026 opening session set a clear focus: “moving from dialogue to coordinated, practical action”. The summit reflected on the growing importance of Africa in shaping the global health agenda and to convene leaders from across sectors and regions with a clear goal to translate dialogue into practical action that strengthens health systems regionally and worldwide.
