In 2025 SANERELA+ was selected to partner with the University of KwaZulu-Natal to work on two research papers: “Ageing with HIV” and “Treatment Fatigue.” Through this collaboration, SANERELA+ was representing the PLHIV sector, and the expectation was that the research process, SANERELA will be strengthened to empower the PLHIV community in South Africa to lead similar initiatives in the future. INERELA+ through the MEL Advisor was invited as a collaborative effort to support its Country Network. The work required research skills, so SANERELA roped in their secretariat (INERELA+) to provide technical support by participating in a capacity-building workshop facilitated by the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN). The workshop was aimed at equipping participants on how to carry out Scoping Review. The Scoping Review is a type of literature review that maps the extent, range, and nature of research on a specific topic, often used to determine if a full systematic review is necessary, summarize available evidence, identify research gaps, and inform future research. The facilitator went through each step of the Scoping Review and participants spent the second day doing the Scoping Review on the topics Ageing with HIV” and “Treatment Fatigue.” The exercise produced practical findings and recommendations that formed part of the to-be-published papers: “Ageing with HIV” and “Treatment Fatigue.” The papers which will pass through the office of the Minister of Health and South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) for approval in line with the funding Terms of Reference will be published as South Africa PLHIV sector research paper to inform the government of South Africa, potential funders and other stakeholders in the health sector.
