Date: 21 to 25 May 2018

This specific event was sponsored by Collaborative for HIV and AIDS, Religion and Theology (CHART), a project of the UKZN School of Religion, Philosophy and Classics. CHART ensures that practitioners and academics who work on the interface of religion, theology and HIV and AIDS and related thematic areas such as patriarchy, gender based violence, sex and sexualities have access to research and papers written on these field.

The Destabilizing Heteronormativity (DH) project seeks to deconstruct the narrative of homophobia through robust discussions and dialogues. It mainly targets cis-gender persons and their use of cis-normativity to justify hate crimes, stigma and discrimination of the LGBTIQ+ citizens. The video, recorded in 2015, documents the experiences of all persons that were involved and can be used as a resource.

The overall objective of the DH project is to create synergy in the response to address African sexual and gender diversity project led by Africans. Which aims to challenge heteronormativity and cis-normativity on the African continent. This is part of a greater effort by AIDS accountability International funded by the Ford Foundation.

The discussion after the screening focussed mainly on how the different faith traditions respond to LGBTIQ+ persons. The use of culture and tradition to discriminate against LGBTIQ+ plus persons was interrogated.
